ABOUT ME

Profile_LinkedIn.jfif

I am an expert in Artificial Intelligence governance and privacy and public policy consultant based in San Francisco and Berlin.

As a Fellow of Europa-Universität Viadrina (European New School of Digital Studies) at AI Campus Berlin, and previously as a Senior Mercator Fellow, I work on bridging the interface between AI companies, the state, civil society and science, helping ensure that the necessary regulatory intentions in European AI development can actually be put into practice rather than ending up as paper tigers.

Previously, as Mozilla Fellow in Residence, I assessed opportunities and limitations of European approaches on Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence in Silicon Valley, and their potential for U.S. businesses and advocacy.

As a privacy professional (CIPP/E), I advise US companies on compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). I also give strategic advice on evolving technology policies world-wide and the complex “global privacy patchwork”.

As a contracting consultant, I work with various private-sector clients as well as non-profit organizations in the areas of technology policy, international events and workshops, and outreach and public relations.

From 2002 through 2015, I worked as a German diplomat, with assignments in Rome, Berlin, where I witnessed and participated in the first drafting of the new EU privacy policy, and San Francisco, where I built strong relationships with Silicon Valley businesses, start-ups, institutions and executives and served as the press spokesperson for the German Government for the Western United States. I started my career with stints at the European Commission Delegation in Beirut/Lebanon and at Europe’s largest think-tank in the field of international politics, the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (German Institute for International and Security Affairs) in Berlin.

I speak fluent German, English, French and Italian and acceptable Spanish and Arabic.
